Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) uses light to measure changes in blood oxygenation. It has been increasingly used to study changes in brain activity, as it is a cost-effective, safe, portable method. We have been using fNIRS to study the brain regions that underlie motivation and cognition in healthy participants. The ultimate goal of this project is to incorporate brain stimulation techniques to activate those brain regions, with the goal of improving motivation and cognition.
